Bicycle Patagonia’s Lakes District Plus! the Island of Chiloé

Join us on our 10-day Bicycling Patagonia’s Lakes District Plus! the Island of Chiloé tour where we will cycle paved roads across the Continental Divide in the Andes, from Argentina into Chile. At this latitude, the mountains are much gentler than the severe Peruvian and Ecuadoran landscapes that come to mind when you think of the Andes. Our route winds from the high plateau setting of San Carlos de Bariloche along Andean lakes, down through the valleys of the border region and into Chile’s Lake District. Cycle past conical volcanoes and snow capped Andean peaks, one of Chile’s famous rushing rivers, and relax in the tranquil settings of our lovely hotels.

Tranquil fjords, wooden houses and churches, the rugged coastline of the Pacific: The Island of Chiloé, in northern Chilean Patagonia, is remniscent of the landscapes in Scandinavia. Though it was inhabited long before the Spanish arrived in 1567, the island remained isolated from the commercial trade routes until the founding of the nearby port city Puerto Montt in 1853. During these three isolated centuries, a unique culture developed. The Chilote are of Spanish and indigenous Mapuche descent, and depend on their marine environment to support their way of life.

Highlights: Chile’s Lake District, Views of Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes, Waterfalls on the Petrohué River, thermal pools, San Carlos de Bariloche, Chiloé Island, Wooden Churches, Penguins.

Bicycling Chile’s Wine Country Plus! the Pacific Coast

One of the most prestigious “new world” wine producing regions, Chile’s central valley has produced award winning wines in recent years. Join us on our bicycle tour of the Chilean wine country where we pedal through vineyards of the Central Valley before turning south and bicycling along the stunning beaches of the scenic Pacific Coast. We stay in historic colonial cities such as Santa Cruz and Constitucion and visit secluded villages and beach resorts. This is an excellent trip for both wine and food lover and photographer!

The Maule and Colchagua wine valleys of central Chile were featured in National Geographic as a must-see for both adventurers and foodies. What better excuse to hop on a bike and pedal the gently rolling terrain along the foothills of the beautiful Chilean coastal mountains while tasting some of Chile’s world-class wines. Arrival and departure couldn’t be easier as we’ll pick you up and drop you back off in Chile’s capital city Santiago.

Expedition: Patagonia Coast to Coast

Join us on this cycling expedition from Chiloé, Chile on the Pacific Coast, over the Andes, down the Chubut River valley through the Argentinian Steppe, to Playa Union on the Atlantic Coast. There are plenty of surprises along the way: starting with the unique culture of the Chilote people who are of Spanish and indigenous Mapuche descent. And towards the end of the Expedition, have a cup of tea at the Welsh settlement Gaiman. Ruta 25 is another highlight. This is one of Argentine Patagonia’s main roads, but also one of the least traveled routes in the country. We’ll enjoy oceans, rain forests, mountains, deserts, river valleys, the Argentinian Steppe and just about every other type of terrain you can imagine on this 700+ mile, 17-day expedition

Unlike our “normal” bike tours, our Expeditions are all about long-distance exploration and the challenge of pedaling across continents. They include the best of a regular ExperiencePlus! tour with the added satisfaction of pedaling longer distances taking travelers across multiple countries or in this case across a continent. Expeditions are for folks who want long days in the saddle followed by fantastic meals and a good night’s sleep before doing it all over again. In 2022, our 17-day expedition takes you through some of Patagonia’s most stunning landscapes as you pedal coast to coast from Chile to Argentina.
