Cycling the Alentejo
The beautiful, rural interior of Portugal’s Alentejo region covers a full third of the country and offers exceptional bicycle touring. The region is a repository of traditional Portuguese lifestyle, with its whitewashed villages, medieval castles, and age-old traditions like cante alentejano. As an “old world” country that is now becoming known for its wine, the Alentejo’s wine routes, produce some of Portugal’s finest wines which reflect both ancient viticultural traditions and modern innovation.
The Alentejo became a crossroads for myriad civilizations, from the prehistoric builders of the megalithic standing stones west of Évora, to the Romans, whose legacy lingers in ancient ruins, and the Moors, who imparted architectural and agricultural influences. Alentejo’s expansive landscapes made it the “breadbasket” of Portugal, its fertile fields playing a pivotal role in feeding the nation.
Local cuisine, rich in olive oil, bread, wine, and hearty dishes like “Açorda” and “Porco Alentejana,” helps fuel any cyclist who pedals through its towns and cork forests which produce nearly half the cork annually harvested worldwide. Indeed, cork is the most important Portuguese export.
