You can count on the fact that every ExperiencePlus! bicycle tour will feature great cycling, so if someone asks me what differentiates one trip from another I immediately think of the towns we stay in and the one’s we visit along the way – to me they are dessert after a feast of cycling – so I was excited to see the return of our Cycling the Czech Republic 7 and 11 day itineraries.
The Czech Republic is home to over 2,000 preserved castles; there are more per square mile than any other country in the world with each telling the story of both the conquerors and the conquered, and the respective shifts in artistic design with each change of power. Beautiful villages transport you through centuries of history and architectural styles. In fact these cycling tours through the Czech Republic feature more UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Lednice, Valtice, Telc, Česky Krumlov, than any other itinerary that we offer. When you consider that there are 10 criteria for UNESCO designation, the first of which is “to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius” you realize that each site offers something unique to the world. Along the way you’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Iron Curtain, a powerful reminder of the division of Europe after WWII.
Stick around for the 11 day Plus! itinerary and you’ll have the chance to sample and learn more about the far flung origins of Budweiser. We’ll also stop to visit the 13th century Hluboka Castle; the last of its renovations occurred in the 19th century when it was transformed into the English Windsor style you see today. Regarded by many as Bohemia’s most beautiful castle, it is certainly a highlight. The Plus! tour also includes a guided walk and night’s stay in the astonishingly beautiful and well-preserved medieval town of Česky Krumlov with its town center nearly completely surrounded by water at its location at a meander of the Vltava River. This charming place is a very fitting end to our journey through stunning architecture, hillside villages with red roofs standing out against a blooming green countryside, and storybook streets with multi-colored building facades that stretch as far as you can see.
We’ll pick you up in Vienna at the start of the tour and drop you off in Prague at the end making arrival and departure arrangements very easy. We highly recommend that you plan on spending a few extra days to explore each of these wonderful cities on your own. Join us on this gentle ride through fairytale landscapes.
