Walk On The Water – Christo’s “Floating Piers”

Christo The Floating Piers

“Walk On The Water” Of Lake Iseo This Summer

Visit Christo’s “Floating Piers” In The Italian Lakes District

This summer, from June 18 to July 3, 2016, internationally-renowned environmental artist Christo will premier his latest monumental work, “The Floating Piers”, directly upon the waters of Lake Iseo in Northern Italy.   The first large scale outdoor project since his wife Jeanne-Claude’s death in 2009, Christo’s installation will enable visitors to walk for nearly two miles across the waters of the lake – suspended upon a “pier” of 200,000 floatable cubes. This historic art event will only last a few short weeks in the summer of 2016, but guests who join our “Cycling Italy’s Lake District Plus!” tour during this time period will be able to see and experience this truly ephemeral piece of artwork when we stop for two days along the shore of Lake Iseo.

“The Experience” and “The Walkway”, In Christo’s Words

RGB_TheFloatingPiers_DrawingMedium_2014(2)The poetic description from Christo’s own website explains it this way: “From June 18 to July 3, 2016, Italy’s Lake Iseo will be reimagined. 70,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric, carried by a modular floating dock system of 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes, will undulate with the movement of the waves as The Floating Piers rise just above the surface of the water. Visitors will experience this work of art by walking on it from Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo, which it encircles. The mountains surrounding the lake will offer a bird’s-eye view of “The Floating Piers”, exposing unnoticed angles and altering perspectives. A 3-kilometer-long walkway will be created as “The Floating Piers” extend across the water of Lake Iseo. The piers will be 16 meters wide and approximately 50 centimeters high with sloping sides. The fabric will continue along 1.5 kilometers of pedestrian streets in Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio.”

The Beauty Of Lake Iseo and The Italian Lakes District

Christo said he chose to build his latest work on beautiful Lake Iseo, which is not as well known as Lake Como or Lake Maggiore, because of its “beautiful small villages and houses and churches and Roman ruins.”

If you would like to see Lake Iseo and experience this historic exhibit please come join us in the Italian Lakes District this summer.
