Cycling in Lombardy region of Italy
Bordered by the Alps and the Po River, Italy’s Lombardy region bridges central Europe and the Mediterranean. The Celts founded Milan around 600 BCE, which under the Romans became Mediolanum or “middle of the plain.” The region’s importance grew with the Roman Empire’s expansion as it was an important crossroads between Rome and other Roman lands.
The 5th century saw Lombardy invaded by the Germanic Lombards, lending the region its name. In the medieval period, Lombardy’s cities, especially Milan, emerged as influential centers of commerce and politics, even as the region fragmented into competing city-states. The Renaissance reaffirmed its cultural prominence, with Milan at the forefront. The Alps, aside from defense, provided trade routes, linking southern and northern Europe.
The 19th and 20th centuries spotlighted Lombardy in Italian unification and industrialization. Its fertile plains supported agriculture, and its cities led Italy’s industrial ascent, aided by its proximity to other European centers.
These contributions collectively underscore Lombardy’s significant role in shaping Italy’s cultural history and its ongoing influence on various aspects of Italian culture and society.
