Bicycling the Islands of Dalmatia Plus! the South Coast

Croatia has one of the most dramatic coastlines in the Mediterranean region. The Dinaric Alps plunge right into the sea, fracturing into a series of islands stretching along the full length of the Dalmatian Coast.

Historically the region was caught among the maritime empire of Venice, the landlocked Austro-Hungarian empire, and the Ottoman Empire which spanned both land and sea. As a result, the cultural heritage of the region bears the fruits of all three of these cultures. The culinary traditions show the best of this heritage, the architecture is purely Mediterranean, and the historical remnants date back to Roman times, though the region is rich in Medieval and Renaissance villages, cities, and architecture.

A favorite seaside destination among central Europeans for over a century, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast has everything you could want for a coastal cycling tour. We begin near Split where we’ll visit Diocletian’s 3rd century palace still inhabited by descendants of the Romans who settled this area and then stop by the waterfalls of Krka National Park.

As our ride continues we explore three of the Mediterranean’s most picturesque islands – Brač, Hvar and Korčula – spending time in the quiet rural areas, ports, and fishing villages.  Visit the Medieval and Renaissance cities that were so important to the Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Austrians, Hungarians, and Croats. To round out the trip, we pedal to the remote interior of coastal Croatia before finishing with a shuttle to the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik, long considered the jewel of the Adriatic. Join us as we explore this spectacular limestone coastline by bicycle!
